Jean Cordier is a professor at AGROCAMPUS OUEST. He is the head of the Research Group in Management within this institution. His main domains of interest are commodity marketing, risk management and market analysis.

During 2003, he is Visiting Research Scholar at the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Ph. D. current thesis topics
- "Contract Design between Farmers and their Cooperatives in the European Changing Economic Environment: Application to dairy Cooperatives in the Western part of France", by Sabine Duvaleix-Treguer. The research study is also supervised by Vincent Hovelaque . The CCAOF (Agricultural Cooperatives from Western France) participates in the project.

- "Farmers' Risk Modelling for Designing Revenue Insurance Contracts: Application to Hog Producers", by Martial Guinvarc'h. The co-advisor is Christian Cadiou (UBO, Brest). EURIA is partner for the project.

Research Topics

The research topics are developped within the more general work of the Laboratoire de Gestion about vertical coordination in agro-food chains. They deal with risk management strategies on agricultural markets and contract management between farmers and the food industry (and/or distributors). This research relates with the general pattern of European agricultural market deregulation (WTO negotiations, enlargment of the European Union to countries from Eastern Europe).

Risk Management on Agricultural Markets
This research work deals with the technical and economic feasibility of revenue insurance contracts on agricultural productions. It examines a private intermediation that transforms farmers' risk by pooling and by transferring systemic risk component on financial markets, especially futures markets.

Contracts between Farmers and Downstream Firms (processing firms and distributors)
This research work is dealing with vertical coordination in the agro-food chain. It examines contracts between suppliers and buyers from a marketing and a operation management approaches. A current thesis is studying the specific relationship between agricultural cooperatives and their members.
